When It Comes To Playing Golf, Senior Players Are On A Par With Their Younger Rivals
In the game of golf senior members of our society seem to go on playing for much longer than in any other physical sports that I know. What is the reason for this? Can you enjoy the game as much as you did when you started out? I guess the answer to that is yes, given the amount of more mature players I see on the course.
Many folk take up the game of golf after retiring from work, it's an ideal pastime to fill the void that's left when your old working hours become your new leisure time! For this reason - and the fact that it is one of the few sports that one can enjoy without doing any physical damage - golf is extremely attractive to retirees.
Other benefits of golf senior players can enjoy;
Exercise - the average distance of a course is usually between 3 and 4 miles, if you hit the ball straight, (I usually walk closer to 6 miles!!)
Fresh air - and plenty of it
It keeps your brain active - sometimes you have to think your way around a golf course
Socially rewarding - meet and play golf with different people
Naturally, you're not going to be as fit, or as strong, or as supple as you once were - you will need to make changes to some aspects of your game. This will mainly affect driving distance and shots with long irons. Chipping and putting are affected less, being a more effortless part of golf senior players I know are actually better at putting now than they were in their youth! If you've been playing quite a while, I would assume that any necessary adjustments have already been made, over time.
I'm not going to bombard you guys with hints and tips that you already know (grandma, suck, eggs) but I would like to pass on one piece of advice. If you are an experienced player thinking of changing your clubs, or new to the game and getting your first set - have them custom-fitted. Almost all suppliers offer this service for free, and it is quite painless. They will take a measurement from your wrist to the floor (arms at sides). Next you are asked to address a ball with a medium iron - from this, the loft and lie angles can be determined. You should then be asked for your choice of grips, jumbo grips may be recommended for arthritis sufferers as they are easier to hold in the fingers. That just leaves the shafts - if you are looking to play consistent golf senior shafts are a must. Senior shafts are more flexible than stiff or regular shafts, they better suit a slower swing. Thats it, you're done - told you it was painless!
